Developed and presented by Butterscotch Shenanigans this witty game is playable on multiple platforms. Crashlands is a crude action-adventure survival game. This game is expressly unique for its self-managing inventory for crafting. After referring to the Crashlands review the epic story places the delivery truck driving protagonist, Flux Dabes, and his robot sidekick JuiceBox, crash-landed on an alien planet.

A frustrating notion Flux can thank the evil alien Hewgodooko for. You then explore, fight, quest, gather resources, craft, build, and tame random creatures to survive as you tap/click your way to total domination of ALL THE THINGS. The Crashlands review previews the multiple game modes for a variety of different difficulties and experiences.

How it Compares

  • The Flame in the Flood
  • The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth
  • Shattered Haven

Crashlands

As the Crashlands review can attest to this casual craft-to-survive multi-platform game has a self-managing, infinite inventory, you never have to think about that will also retrieve your tools when you need them. Tap/click to navigate through the world, or play with a supported controller/game pad. Crafting menu mechanics are simple for fast and easy crafting. Just stroll around the planet to smash, cut, and hack your resources from the surrounding environment. Juicebox will help you stay on task during quests with a mildly insulting feedback based on the current objective.

Just as the Crashlands review describes the gameplay is vibrant, comical, and simple. The unique story provides excitement, plot twists, and many laughs. Crafting and building are fast and simple. The self-managing inventory is functional and easy for any level of gamer to use. Gathering resources are fast and efficient, so you can get back to crafting awesome weapons and helpful tools. Controller/game pad support allows for fast, optimal harvesting and the most comfortable method of gameplay. Currently, this game does not offer any kind of multiplayer or local 2 player co-op game modes. Future updates are said to offer the option to play online with a friend in your local area.

  • Reasonably priced for the quality
  • Playable on multiple platforms
  • Infinite & self-managing inventory
  • Deeply subversive
  • Crafting is required for gameplay
  • Single Player ONLY

The Flame in the Flood

This rough yet visually stunning survival, action-adventure, the single player game provides a similar look and feel in its HUD and crafting style. Playing as Wilson, you travel both on foot and by raft through the remnants of a post-societal America. The main goal is survival. You can craft and build shelters, traps, and rafts out of gathered resources.

Your journey through the mysterious remains of the estranged city will have you face wild creatures and set clever traps. Upgrade your raft to get from A to B faster. Developed and presented by the art developer from Bioshock, and a variety of veteran team members from Bioshock, Halo, Guitar Hero and Rock Band game series.

Gameplay is simple, crafting menu and HUD are functional, and the main objective is fairly straightforward. Survive. Shelter and raft building is more simple than one would expect but finding resources can take some time. There are only so many things you can make; items are limited. But the combinations of raft customizations are endless. However, the limited item list makes for a simpler gameplay experience.

You don’t die in this game, and your overall objective is plain and simple. Survive no matter what during your epic rough-river voyages and when you travel on foot. This quirky and practical indie game requires you to craft items and tools in order to build various means of survival. Seamless transition from console to the application.

Visually impressive gameplay, with a unique storyline. Simple user interface and crafting options. A rather refreshing addition to the genre of anti-death survival games. Epic voyages will help get you from A to B be on this eerie journey among the remains of your estranged city. The story itself has a unique depth in its interpretation of a potential post-apocalyptic town.

It’s especially charming art style alongside its unique crafting and travel really make this game one of a kind. This game is available on Xbox One, PC, MacOSX, iPhone App Store, Gag.com, and Google Play. Equipped to be completely compatible with any basic controller or game pad setup on console or on your computer.

  • Reasonably priced for the quality
  • Playable on multiple platforms
  • Visually appealing & unique concept
  • No fast-travel features on maps
  • Crafting required for gameplay
  • Single player ONLY

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth

This sequel to the poorly drawn horror survival game, The Binding of Isaac, is another interesting combination of high-quality claymation, doodles, and 8-Bit pixels. This strangely adorable survival game is a little bit different from the first two in this series of reviews. Isaac seeks shelter from his crazy overly religious mother in the basement where he faces hordes of deranged enemies and strange treasures that give superhuman abilities. Progression is unique to the character and provides endless hours of building their skills and powers.

If you enjoy deeply investing in your games and don’t mind being challenged, this would be the ideal game for you. This particularly twisted game can actually be considerably difficult at certain points, but game play, in general, is average and easy to learn. There is no crafting; this is a dungeon crawling, action-adventure, shooter. Recommended for the most casual to pro gamers. Have a friend back you up using the local co-op mode and things might not seem so bleak down there. Character progression is simple and dependent on logged game play experience.

Overall a decent experience with a simple and expandable storyline. Feature film quality claymation cutaways and endings. Recommended for a somewhat mature audience due to the somewhat morbid vibe and context. This is a fairly subversive game that you generally invest countless hours of game play. Due to the somewhat morbid nature of this game, it is expressly recommended for a more mature audience(+16). Endless places to explore in this big dark basement of his, plenty of hiding spots for protecting his life. A shooter unlike most as you navigate from a top view 3rd person-ish perspective against unimaginable spooks and beasts.

  • Playable on ALL platforms
  • Local 2 player co-op
  • Endless hours of game play
  • Strangely high-quality cutscenes
  • Some very difficult challenges
  • Morbid and violent content
  • Graphics appeal to a select audience
  • Top view perspective ONLY

Shattered Haven

Offering a different take on the zombie apocalypse concept, this 8-Bit dungeon crawler game puts survival to a test of environmental puzzles, in addition to regular combat with enemies. Darryl and Mary Williams manage to survive since That Day. They built a secure enough farm to have a daughter five years later. You can guide different members of the Williams family through various unique story paths with one of several endings. But regardless your main objective is to survive longer, grow and protect your family from super powerful zombies.

Just like your typical choose your own adventure style game, absolutely all the choices you make in the game ultimately determines the outcome of the story. There is also a level editor where you can create and test out your own levels, adventures, bosses, puzzles, and hilarious high-quality cut scenes. You can play this bizarre retro survival game on PC, OSX, and Ubuntu(10.10 or later.)

Game play is not entirely difficult to start with, but as you obtain certain items, the controls frequently change. As you can imagine this makes things rather confusing and eventually frustrating. Switching between characters is easy and unlocks new encounters. The combat and the vast number of puzzles vary in difficulty, and the storyline is dicey at best. Regardless the outcome is very simple; your actions decide the outcome of the story. Game experiences minimal bugs and has co-op options for up to 2 players. Currently only offers story mode for users to tackle and overcome.

Everything you would expect from a 2D game, but combined with an RPG, puzzle, survival, zombie game. You can play as quite a few different characters and follow their unique storyline. Its 8-Bit style does not impress much among players although if you can deal with it, the unique story and randomly challenging puzzles can be extensively entertaining. Overall, Shattered Haven experiences very little bugs or glitches and runs as smoothly as 8-Bit graphics can.

  • A unique take on post-apocalyptic survival
  • Reasonably priced for the quality
  • Local 2 player co-op
  • Rarely experiences bugs
  • Graphics appeal to a select audience
  • Confusing control options & objectives
  • Overall unappealing experience for most
  • Only offers a story mode

Conclusion

Throughout this review process, we found that each title in this group offers its own unique morbidity although based on the Crashlands review the Crashlands offers the most light-hearted and humorous view of the lot. Our other reviewed titles while serious, provide features that can also potentially be construed as somewhat comical. But this may or may not be a dark comedy, depending on your sense of humor.

Keep yourself completely content no matter where you happen to stop moving. The Crashlands review ultimately reveals that not only does the game offer superior features and interface mechanics, but its storyline is much more appropriate for an even wider range of gamers. It’s a highly addictive time consumed with something to offer almost everyone who plays craft-to-survive style games.
